Banh mi sandwiches are a popular Vietnamese dish that have gained a lot of traction in recent years. They are typically made with a combination of meats, vegetables, and herbs. But one of the latest trends in banh mi sandwiches is the use of jackfruit, a tropical fruit. This vegan spin on the traditional dish is becoming increasingly popular for its unique flavor and nutritional benefits.
## What is Jackfruit?
Jackfruit is a tropical fruit native to South and Southeast Asia. It has an oblong shape and a spiky exterior. The flesh of the fruit is yellowish-orange in color and has a sweet smell and taste. It’s a popular ingredient in traditional cuisines all over the world.
When it comes to texture, jackfruit is similar to pulled pork. It’s often used as a vegan substitute for pork or beef in dishes like tacos and sandwiches. Jackfruit is also very nutritious and is a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, and potassium.
## How to Make a Jackfruit Banh Mi Sandwich
Making a jackfruit banh mi sandwich is a simple process. Start by marinating the jackfruit in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, and spices. Then, cook the jackfruit in a pan until it’s soft and has a slightly charred flavor.
Next, assemble the sandwich. To do this, spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of a toasted French baguette. Then, layer the jackfruit, pickled carrots, cucumber slices, jalapeno slices, cilantro, and fresh lime wedges on top. Finally, top off the sandwich with the top half of the baguette and enjoy.
